Can I use plastic containers to store my cigars?
Again and again, beginners who don't yet have a humidor, are told to use a Tupperware container, or comparable, as a temporary solution for storing cigars. Is that a good option?
A problem similar to what happens with cigar jars arises here. Each time it is opened moisture escapes from inside, but using a humidifier inside a plastic container poses a great danger of over-saturating the contents. If you simply put a glass of water or a wet sponge inside the small, air-tight container, an overly humid atmosphere is virtually guaranteed as well. What's more, foreign odours from the plastic container can be transferred to the cigars.
But the worst advice given to beginners is to put their cigars in the fridge. Cigars should never be stored in the refrigerator because the humidity level there is generally very low, it is an unlimited source of foreign aromas, and besides, cigars should be stored at temperatures above 16°C.
If you store your cigars in a plastic container, you will have to control the humidity level very carefully. We recommend buying only as many cigars as you intend to smoke within a week. Otherwise, it would be best to consider buying a humidor as soon as possible, and store your cigars there for as long as you like.
