Are jars a good option for storing cigars?
In Cuba, porcelain and ceramic jars have been used for more than 200 years to store and display cigars. Habanos, the supplier of premium Cuban cigars, occasionally offers special limited editions packaged in jars.
Jars are suitable for cigar storage provided that they have an airtight seal and that the cigars packed inside already contained the perfect amount of moisture when the jar was sealed. As such, no humidifier is required. As soon as a jar is opened at home though, the moisture will be released and a jar without a humidifier will no longer be able to retain the correct humidity level. The cigars must then either be consumed quickly or moved to a humidor.
If the jars are equipped with a disproportionately large humidifier, the cigars run the risk of becoming too moist. Similar to travel humidors, care should also be taken here to ensure that the cigars do not come into direct contact with the ventilation openings of the humidifier.
